Disappearing Illustrator Files and Memory Plug-ins
for Adobe® After Effects 4.0 for Mac OS®
The Disappearing Illustrator Files resolves a problem in Adobe After Effects 4.0 for Windows in which imported native Adobe Illustrator files or Adobe Illustrator EPS files disappear or partially disappear from the Composition and Footage windows. After installing this plug-in, native Adobe Illustrator files and Adobe Illustrator EPS files appear as expected in the Composition and Footage windows.
The Memory plug-in resolves the following problems in Adobe After Effects 4.0 for Mac OS:
-- out of memory errors occur while rendering.
-- "internal structure damage" errors occur.
-- rendering slow-downs occur when the cache is full.
After installing this plug-in, the errors and performance problems described above no longer occur.
System Requirements
Adobe After Effects 4.0 for Mac OS (any language version)
Installation Notes
To install both plug-ins:
1. Close After Effects.
2. Place the AE4.0 Illustrator Patch plug-in and AE4.0 Memory Patch plug-in to your After Effects plug-in folder.
3. Start After Effects and change your cache preference (File>Preferences>Cache) to "Favor Speed".
Additional Notes
No Memory plug-in is needed for After Effects for Windows.
How the Memory Plug-in Works
Most memory problems arise from After Effects' extensive image caching (to avoid expensive re-renders) which uses all available memory for storing rendered images.
The memory patch plug-in reserves a minimum amount memory for allocations done by codecs and third party plug-ins.
By default, the plug-in maintains a minimum of 10MB. When there is less than 10MB free, the memory patch pushes the cache back by 20MB. In this case, the minimum amount being reserved by the memory patch is 10MB and the maximum is 20MB.
Customizing the Memory Plug-in
Based on the nature of the comps you render, you may want to increase the maximum cache memory reserve. If you render large comps (e.g. 2000 x 1500 or larger), you may need to increase the cache reserve amounts to 20-40MB or larger. Keep in mind as you increase the memory reserve, less memory is available for After Effects' cache which can lead to longer render times.
The minimum and maximum values for the memory reserve can be controlled by editing the plug-in's filename in the Finder.
To Change Memory Reserve to 20-40MB
1. Quit After Effects.
2. Rename the plug-in to "AE4 Memory Patch(20-40)".
3. Relaunch After Effects.
Note: the parentheses in the filename are required to set min/max values.
If no values are specified in the filename (e.g. "AE4 Memory Patch"), then the plug-in uses the defaults (10MB min / 20MB max) which is equivalent to naming the plug-in "AE4 Memory Patch(10-20)".
Known Issues
This plug-in can cause pixels to drop out in QuickTime source footage compressed with keyframed codecs (e.g. Animation) during RAM previews. To avoid incorporating the frames with dropped pixels in your final output, select Edit > Purge > Image Cache before rendering. Note: footage compressed with keyframable codecs will not cause this problem if the keyframing option was turned off when the footage was compressed.
